There is no problem of applicability or usability on petrol pumps as it is applicable at all leading petrol pumps. From the fuel purchase benefits point of view, the major drawback of this card is that all the benefits of cashback, accelerated reward points, and fuel surcharge waiver is applicable only on HPCL petrol pumps. So, not only you forfeit all those benefits but pay more than what you get if you use this card to buy fuel on petrol pumps other than HPCL.

The Verdict

If only benefits provided on this card could have been at all petrol pumps! You have, on your every fuel purchase, three kinds of benefits cashback, accelerated reward points and finally fuel surcharge waiver. To make it even better the annual fee is just Rs. 199. So, it’s simple, if you normally purchase your fuel from HPCL, this is the card which will save you the most on your fuel bill.

You can earn 1000 bonus points every month by simply using your card four times on transactions of Rs. 1000 and above every month. You also earn 5000 bonus points when you renew your card for the first time. If you use your card three times within 60 days of card membership, you get 4000 bonus Membership Rewards points. No to forget you earn 1 Membership Rewards points for every Rs. 50 spent on your card. Too many points, eh!

Well, you also have 3% cashback for each transaction for fuel at the eligible HPCL, IOCL, SHELL and BPCL fuel outlets, which just about covers all the petrol pumps.

Besides, the fuel surcharge is 0% for transactions less than Rs.25000 and 0.3% for above Rs. 25000 at all HPCL petrol pumps.

It may appear too good a bargain to have 3% cashback on fuel at almost all the major petrol pumps of India, but it is superficial. The real benefit you get is just 0.5% (except at HPCL petrol pumps) cashback. How? You need to know that the fuel surcharge on this card is 2.5% i.e. 1.5% higher than normal. So, what remains of your 3% cashback after the fuel surcharge is just 0.5%.

One other major discomfiture is the high annual fee at Rs. 4500 per year. And you don’t have any minimum spending limit above which it could be waived off.

The Verdict

If you want to buy a card which can give you a better reward rate for your purchase as well as opportunity to earn bonus points and cashback (on fuel), then this is a good choice of card. How to use those points? Simple, use those points to fuel your fuel bill.

Besides having the second highest annual fee (at Rs.1000), the card offers no cashback either. But the biggest sore in the throat is that you can only convert (or for that matter earn) Turbo points for fuel at an equivalent rate only at IndianOil petrol pump outlets.

The verdict

This card has similar benefits, although a bit subdued, as ICICI HPCL Coral American Express and plagued with the same problem, applicability at a particular petrol pump. Well, if you do not cross path with HPCL petrol pumps then probably you must be using InidianOil petrol pumps, right!

If cashback is what you love then this card is for you. It offers 5% cashback on fuel. If you drive every day, this is a great card to get some money back. You can earn as much as Rs. 150/month as cashback. However, this is not the best part, the best part is that you earn this cashback at all petrol pumps in India.

The annual fee is also relatively low at Rs. 500/year. More so, it can be waived off if you spend Rs. 20000 in the previous year.

This card, however besides cashback, doesn’t offer any prospects of earning reward points. So even though you get cashback for some purchases, you don’t earn anything for other purchases that you would be making. Moreover, the 5% cashback offer on fuel, bill payments, recharge, IRCTC bookings is also capped at Rs. 150 per month.

The Verdict

HDFC Bharat Cashback Credit card is good if you use your vehcile extensively. As in that case you don’t have to keep worrying about finding the right petrol pump. While on the other hand, cashback is a lot more effective and simple reward structure than accumulating some Reward points.
